All of these organizations accept monetary donations but sometimes, they need help with things that don’t cost money. Please consider giving some of your time to one of these outstanding organizations. Church OfficeOur Church could not run without our volunteers! We are currently looking for volunteers to answer phones, make photocopies, greet newcomers, and offer a warm smile to all they encounter on weekdays in the office. This may be your special niche! Call Kim Alexander at (573) 443-3111.Bethlehem HomePhone Number:(573) 449-5433 About the Organization: Bethlehem Home is a Christian maternity home that provides a positive alternative to abortion for pregnant teens and young mothers. They teach Christian values and demonstrate Christ’s love to their residents and share with them God’s plan for salvation. They help young women become independent and to learn the skills necessary to live on their own and effectively parent their children. They assist them in furthering their education as well as enrolling them in additional supportive services such as parenting classes, individual counseling, job training and interview classes, drivers education, etc. Volunteer Opportunities: Bethlehem Home is seeking Christian women who will serve as Godly mentors for their residents. They also need volunteers who will commit to teaching a Bible study class on a regular basis (weekly or monthly). Call them to volunteer today! CROP Hunger WalkContacts: Walt McManus (573) 489-5038 (local) or Joyce Holley (888) 297-2767 (Church World Service) About the Organization: CROP, the community hunger appeal of Church World Service, works to provide sustainable agriculture in the U.S. and around the world. CROP Hunger Walks help to support the overall ministry of Church World Service, especially the grassroots, hunger-fighting development efforts of partner agencies in more than 80 countries. Volunteer Opportunity: Walking participants secure pledges for this project. Volunteers are always needed the day of the Walk. Details will be published in the Messenger and Sunday worship bulletin nearer the planned Walk, which is held the first Sunday in October. Festival Of SharingPhone Number: call Trudy at the Missouri United Methodist Conference Center 573-441-1770, or email her at tmcmanus@moumethodist.org About the Organization: The Festival of Sharing is a multi-denominational mission outreach program that is held yearly on the third Saturday in October (closest date to World Food Day) at the State Fair Grounds in Sedalia. Currently, twenty-eight (28) church denominations and faith communities participate in this statewide gathering. Volunteer Opportunity: Attend the Festival and help out where needed. Closer to the date, the Messenger will advertise different MUMC groups that are volunteering. You could go with a group, with your family, or just by yourself. All help is welcome! Volunteer Opportunities: Monthly cleaning crews, springtime outdoor gardening projects, etc. Habitat For HumanityPhone Number of Organization: Bill View at (573) 499-1202 Organization’s Mission: Provide a decent house to a family who cannot otherwise afford it. There is no down payment and no interest on a 20 year loan. Volunteers and homeowners work together in the building process. This is a “hand up” not a “hand out”. Habitat for Humanity International is an ecumenical Christian ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty (substandard) housing and homelessness worldwide and to make affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Jail MinistryPhone Number: Susan Williams 449-2705 About this Ministry: The Jail Ministry is under the auspices of the Columbia Interfaith Council and is coordinated by Rev. Mickey Havener. The Columbia Interfaith Council budgets $1,000 a year to purchase Bibles to be given to the inmates. In addition to the one women's service each Sunday there are three services for the men. About eighteen other churches provide leadership for this ministry at the Boone County Jail. Volunteer Opportunities: Missouri United Methodist Church has the responsibility for conducting a worship service for women at the Boone County Jail at 2:30 pm on the fourth Sunday during the months of January, March, May, July, September and November. Volunteer Opportunities: Each meal is prepared and served by volunteers. MUMC is responsible for the second Saturday of each month. Meals On WheelsOrganization’s Phone Number: (573) 886-7554 Organization’s Mission: To assist individuals with problems related to nutrition and health by providing delivery of a hot nutritious meal to persons of any age, people with limited ability or incentive to shop or cook, and persons recovering from recent hospitalizations or illness regardless of their ability to pay. Volunteer Opportunities: Meals on Wheels can always use volunteers. Please call them today to help out! Also, if you are in need of their assistance, please call and enroll in their program. Mid-Missouri Furniture BankOrganizations Phone Numbers: About the Organization: The Mid-Missouri Furniture Bank (MMFB) is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization providing donated furniture and house wares free of charge to qualifying families and individuals in need in Central Missouri. Volunteer Opportunities: This organization needs help with pick-ups and deliveries of furniture. Light warehouse work and client services also needed. Please call them today to volunteer your time. PET (Personal Energy Transportation) – ColumbiaOrganization’s Phone Number: (573) 886-7877 Organization’s Mission: The Personal Energy Transportation (PET) Project's mission is to provide appropriate mobility for all of God's children in need. We seek to provide mobility first for those in greatest need and with the least resources in poor or underdeveloped countries. Regional AIDS Interfaith Network (RAIN)Organization’s Phone Number: (573) 875-8687 About the Organization: MUMC started the Regional AIDS Interfaith Network (RAIN), which has since been incorporated, in 1992. It is the only community-based AIDS service organization in the 25 county region that makes up central Missouri. Their mission continues to be twofold: to provide prevention education to the community designed to help stop the spread of HIV disease and to provide non-medical, compassionate care to persons living with HIV and AIDS, their families, and friends. Volunteer Opportunities: RAIN can always use help fundraising and with awareness activities. They have planned a BBQ contest at the Boone County Fair, Salute to Life Walk held annually in May, and a Wine and Art Auction held annually in November. The ShelterOrganization’s Phone Number: 573-875-0503 Organization’s Mission: To provide safety, education and empowerment to victims of abuse. Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer groups are needed to do painting projects, provide landscaping (weeding) services, and other maintenance projects. Call them to help out today! Voluntary Action CenterOrganization’s Phone Number: (573)449-6959 Organization’s Mission: To serve as the agency of first and last resort, providing information and referral to the social services community and providing emergency assistance to families when local programs are unable to meet critical needs. VAC also works to provide community wide volunteer coordination engaging more people in volunteer service to help solve serious social problems. VAC acts as a catalyst in identifying and addressing emerging community needs. Volunteer Opportunities: Each year at Christmas MUMC’s Missions Committee sponsors Adopt-A-Family, which is coordinated by the Voluntary Action Center. MUMC also provides the use of Whittler Hall and kitchen for VAC’s annual “Christmas in July” party. Voluntary Action Center provides a chicken dinner and small gifts to those less privileged in Columbia, usually feeding more than two hundred persons. The WardrobeOrganization’s Phone Number: (573) 442-3260 Organization’s Mission: The Wardrobe provides the sale of good, used clothing at minimal cost to those who can afford to pay. The money from these sales is used to provide school clothing for those in need. The Wardrobe fills the needs of individuals referred by community agencies, schools, and churches at no cost. Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers, through United Methodist Women, work the fourth Wednesday of each month. |
