A portion of the proceeds will provide funding for brass scholarships at the University of Missouri.

An Evening with Ralph Vaughn Williams Nov. 2, 2019 7:00pm
The Columbia Civic Orchestra and Columbia Chorale come together to present a program of music by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. The orchestra opens the concert with two contrasting works, Vaughan Williams’ jovial English Folk Song Suite and gorgeous Fantasia on Themes of Thomas Tallis. Then the Chorale joins the Orchestra for a performance of Vaughan Williams’ cantata Dona Nobis Pacem, which combines secular texts of Walt Whitman along with religious passages while pleading “on earth peace, goodwill to men.”

“An Ambush of Conductors” Concert

Maestro Kirk Trevor has been leading internationally acclaimed conducting workshops around the world for years. Again, this year he will be teaching in Columbia some of the world’s most up and coming young conductors. The culmination of this week-long intense session will be a full concert with the conductor workshop participants leading the Missouri Symphony. You will be amazed by the skill and talent of these young maestros. The audience is invited to a reception with the conductors after the concert.

Sights & Sounds – the Skinner Organ inside and out

Organist David Cason will highlight this unique program that will, through pictures, music, and the spoken word, unveil the secrets of the great Aeolian-Skinner Organ. With 4 manuals (keyboards), 44 stops, 51 ranks, and 3297 pipes it is one of the largest pipe organs in the Midwest.

Come with us as we take a tour through the inside of the organ chamber, the console, and the pedals in an extravaganza that will demonstrate the incredible capabilities of this exceptional instrument.

Lessons and Carols – an Advent concert

Lessons and Carols was first formalized by Edward White Benson, later the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1880. In 1918 it was adapted by King’s College, Cambridge, UK and has been performed there each year since on Christmas Eve. Dr. Tim Coday, MUMC director of music ministries, will mirror this festival of nine lessons and carols into an Advent evening worth remembering.

Columbia Community Band

This spring concert will feature the Columbia Community Band playing all Missouri composers. The Columbia Community Band, one of the Midwest's premier symphonic concert bands was founded in 1981. The band offers membership to professional and non-professional musicians from all across the Mid-Missouri community. Performances include classical, contemporary, and festive pieces in a wide variety of community venues.

Hear your seasonal favorites performed by some of the finest brass players in Missouri:  the Mizzou Brass, the MU Brass Choir, Trumpet Ensemble, Trombone Choir, Horn Choir and the Tuba Euphonium Ensemble,. Under the direction of Dr. Tim Howe, Associate Professor, Trombone/*Brass Area Coordinator, University of Missouri, these fine ensembles will surely put you in the spirit of Christmas! Joining the MU Brass this year is one of Missouri's most popular jazz ensembles, the Alan Beeson Trio, led by Mizzou Alumni Alan Beeson. Their special arrangements of the season’s most popular carols will add a special musical dimension to this year’s concert.
